Cataract Symptoms

Information from Florida Eye Surgeons at SNEADCataract

Cataracts can be a serious problem. Since they grow slowly, many people think that their vision is just getting worse because of age, and they fail to get the cataracts treated correctly. Cataracts are cloudy formations that grow on the eye's natural crystalline lens. While some may not be very serious, others can strongly impact your vision.

Cataracts affect vision because the cloudy formations on the crystalline lens diffract light entering the eye so that it is not focused correctly onto the retina. There are various symptoms that can signal you have or are developing cataracts:

  • Glare - If the glare from lights is significant, it can be difficult to read and perform other tasks
  • Halos - generally occur at night, but can impair night driving ability significantly
  • Double or Multiple Vision
  • Blurry Vision
  • Diminished reading ability
  • Changes in Glasses Prescription - if your vision is deteriorating, causing you to need a progressively higher prescription, it can be a sign that you have cataracts
  • Filmy Vision
  • Colors seem Faded
  • A white or "milky" spot or blotch in the middle of the eye

Losing your vision can be a very difficult experience. Although it may not seem like a big deal when the cataract is small, but your enjoyment of life can be seriously diminished with cataracts. People suffering from serious cataracts may not be able to drive at night and may need assistance with even normal day-to-day tasks.

Cataracts can be detected by an experienced ophthalmologist with an eye exam. It is important to schedule regular eye exams so that even if you are not bothered by your vision now, any developing cataracts can be detected.

Unfortunately, the only treatment for cataracts is eye surgery, where the crystalline lens is removed and replaced with an Intraocular Lens (IOL). However with new Intraocular Lens (IOL) options, you can regain much of the vision that you had prior to cataracts and reduce your need for eyeglasses or contacts.

Contact SNEADCataract today to schedule your eye exam if you are suffering from any of the cataract symptoms listed above.
